The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) has listed seven new chemicals on the REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC); a list of substances that may have serious effects on human health or the environment.

The seven chemicals include Bisphenol A (BpA), two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), three cadmium compounds, a fire retardant (commonly referred to as Dechlorane Plus), and a reaction product of Bismuthiol I/formaldehyde/heptyl phenol.

The increase in severity of the BpA, the two PAHs and the cadmium compounds, has escalated these from many brands and retailers restricted substance list to a declaration by the tannery that they include these SVHC in their chemistry.

The PAHs, chrysene (CAS #218-01-9) and benzanthracene (CAS #56-55-3) are often contaminants that sometimes appear in leather and are screened for by top brands and retailers.

LASRA can test for 16 PAHs including these two, chrysene and benzanthracene.
