Our new fluorescence detector on the HPLC is a precision tool which provides LASRA with the capability to determine the amino acid composition of biological materials with very high resolution.

We have developed a technique which provides full separation of all the standard amino acids, including the two amino acids unique to collagen (hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine – see graph) as well as proteoglycans, elastin and keratin. This means we can now quantify the removal of these materials in hides and skins during the different leather processing stages including soaking, liming and bating or even post-tanning.

Please contact Rafea Naffa at LASRA for more information on how this powerful technique can help you optimise your processing recipes.
