On November 8, the Director of the SME Department of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Gatti, stated in his written statement that the country will continue to work hard to promote the development of the leather, footwear and leather goods industries.

The leather industry measures make it more competitive globally, and the leather industry has made a significant contribution to the development of the national economy. Indonesia’s leather, footwear and leather products have great potential for development. Currently, Indonesia’s exports of leather, footwear and leather products rank sixth in the world.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, from January to September 2018, Indonesia’s exports of leather goods, footwear and leather goods reached US$ 4.16 billion, an increase of 6.28% over the same period in 2017. The main exporting countries are the United States, Belgium, Japan and China.

Gatti said that one of Indonesia’s strengths is the creativity of craftsmen, which makes our products quite competitive in domestic and international markets. The Ministry of Industry will continue to implement a plan to improve human resource capacity in the leather industry. In addition, the Ministry of Industry has also proposed the revitalization of the SMI luggage centre in East Java to promote the development of the leather, footwear and leather products industries. The revitalization plan will enhance the attraction of the centre, making it an ideal place to shop and play.
