Research

LASRA research covers leather production, processes and product development, and waste treatment—on top of this we have researchers looking at raw stock improvement on farms at one end of the spectrum and a consumer complaints service for footwear and leather goods at the other.

Our research ranges over all aspects of leather production—fellmongering, hide processing, lamb pelt production, wool skin technology—it even covers such extraordinary areas as fish skin tanning and opossum golf glove leathers.

We also undertake development work for international companies and government contract research. International companies place particular value on our range of skills, depth of experience and highly competitive pricing.

"The research into lightweight
leather production could
open up new market options."

Industry approval extends across all our research activities to ensure both high value and total relevance.

Pioneering research includes such diverse achievements as:

the LASRA gas depelting system which uses sterile gas to remove skins, stop pulling damage, assist with carcase hygiene and improve chain efficiency.
the novel use of carbon dioxide or dry ice as a temporary preservative, providing efficient cooling to protect stock in transit and remove the problems of spillage and biocide use.
the LASRA ThruBlu chrome tanning system that eradicates pickling and basification and dramatically reduces chloride and sulphate in effluent

"LASRA research into skin components and how they respond to processing has helped us understand a lot more about controlling our production."
"We like the way LASRA research is taken through the pilot stages to get it ready for use in industry."
